The BBB Institute for Marketplace TrustSM (BBB Institute) marked the first annual “National Scam Survivor Day” on May 9th by hosting a symposium on scams and launching a new online resource aimed at helping people who have been hurt by scams. Following BBB’s registration of the new day, Rep. Bryan Steil introduced a bipartisan resolution (H. Res. 1201) to recognize the impact of scams on Americans and officially designate May 9th as National Scam Survivor Day.

About the toolkit:

The Scam Survival Toolkit connects people with the information they need to help restore their financial, mental, and emotional health. It features a trauma-informed design and empathetic language to put people in the right frame of mind to process the guidance on the site. The site provides steps they should take to prevent further financial impact and guidance for restoring their long-term financial and emotional well-being.

Users are also connected to the BBB’s Scam Prevention Guide to provide them with the knowledge they need to avoid becoming repeat victims.

This new online toolkit was made possible with support from two BBB Institute Corporate Trust Council members: Amazon and Capital One.

About the symposium:

Hosted at Amazon’s H2Q headquarters in Arlington, VA. on May 9th, the “Symposium on Scams: Shifting the Focus from Victim to Survivor” event featured remarks by Nicholas Smyth, Pennsylvania’s Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General followed by two panels that addressed “Understanding victim needs” and “Addressing victim needs.” Attendees heard first-hand accounts from two scam survivors and learned new ways to frame the conversation when discussing scams and those they impact.
